Have you had your flu jab yet?

Health professionals at Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group are urging those who are eligible for a flu vaccine to attend their GP practice or local community pharmacy before the virus takes hold this winter.

The NHS offers a free flu vaccination each year to those most at risk, including:

  • Pregnant women
  • Children aged two to three years (via a quick, painless nasal spray)
  • Anyone aged 65 years or over
  • Anyone aged six months to under 65 years in a clinical risk group (for example those suffering from long-term health conditions such as COPD, heart failure, emphysema, diabetes or asthma)
  • Residents living in a long-stay residential care home
  • Carers (including young carers)

The vaccination is also available to those aged four to eight years through their school. (See notes to editors).

Some participating pharmacists also offer the flu jab at cost, for those who would still like to be vaccinated, but are not eligible to receive it for free.

Dr Nicky Aloysius, local GP and clinical respiratory lead for Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Group said:

“Flu is an unpredictable illness. It also presents a real risk for those who are most vulnerable this winter. It can exacerbate conditions such as chronic lung disease and asthma, and cause serious complications for people with an underlying health condition.

“We know that the best way to protect ourselves and our family from the flu virus is to have the vaccination so I would really encourage anyone who is in an ‘at risk group’ to get themselves booked in for the jab. If you have young children, parents who are eligible, or elderly neighbours, please also think of them so we can make sure they are protected too.”

Anyone who is thinking of getting the flu jab this year, and wishes to discuss the vaccination further, should contact their GP or pharmacist or for more information visit www.nhs.uk/flujab

Notes to editors:

Flu vaccination for children aged four to eight

Schools with pupils aged four to eight years are now responsible for arranging flu vaccinations. Schools will each have their own plans for contacting parents of children in this age range, and will do so throughout the winter period. If you have a child of this age, who you wish to receive a free vaccination, and have not yet been contacted, please discuss this with your child’s education provider.
