NHS staff from NHS Guildford and Waverley, North West Surrey and Surrey Downs Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) will be making appearances at shopping centres across Epsom, Weybridge, Leatherhead and Guildford in November to help raise awareness of the dangers of flu, the benefits of getting vaccinated and offering general winter health advice.
For some people flu can lead to serious complications and even lead to hospitalisation. Public Health England estimates that an average 8,000 people die from flu in England each year.
Anyone in the following categories is eligible for a free flu vaccination from their GP or local community pharmacy:
- All children aged two to nine (but not ten years or older) on 31 August 2018
- Those aged six months to under 65 years in clinical risk groups (for example those suffering from long-term health conditions such as bronchitis, emphysema, diabetes or asthma)
- Pregnant women
- Those aged 65 years and over
- Those in long-stay residential care homes
Eileen Clark, Deputy Director for Quality and Nursing for the Surrey Heartlands CCGs, says: “Flu is a major threat to our health from early autumn right through to spring. It’s really important that people who are more vulnerable know they can get vaccinated and get themselves protected.
“Not only does vaccination help prevent flu, it provides more protection against secondary bacterial infections such as pneumonia, which, like flu, can be fatal in older people or those with long term conditions. Avoiding illnesses like this also reduces the need for antibiotics which in turn prevents antibiotic resistance – another serious problem facing the UK population. Our best advice is to get vaccinated and protect yourself and your family from what can be a really nasty illness.”
The Surrey Heartlands flu pop-ups will be at the following locations:
9.30am-2pm, 5 November, The Ashley Shopping Centre, Epsom
9.30am-2pm, 6 November, Brooklands Tesco Extra, Weybridge
9.30am-2pm, 8 November, The Swan Shopping Centre, Leatherhead
9.30am-2pm, 13 November, The Friary Shopping Centre, Guildford
Please note NHS staff will not be dispensing flu vaccinations at these events. They are public engagement and information events only.
