First Class Finalists - HSJ Patient Safety Awards

Championing patient safety amidst challenges that the health and social care sector is facing

Following one of the toughest years in the health and social care sector, Surrey Heartlands continues to champion patient safety amidst challenges that the health and social care sector is facing.

Congratulations to Erika Bower, Quality Lead and the ICS Medicines Safety Programme team, led by Nikki Smith Patient Safety Lead for Medicines, who were both finalists in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2021 and were recognised for their team’s outstanding contribution to healthcare.

The ICS Medicines Safety Programme team’s entry was in the Best Use of Technology in Patient Safety category. The team spearheaded a multi-disciplinary solution to ensure safer valproate prescribing in mental health through a clinical and digital redesign. Together with Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, the team created a bespoke, end-to-end digital solution that supports the capture, monitoring and process facilitation of the valproate best practice pathway. This includes a digitalised GP referral form and a virtual based caseload with team and trust-wide overview.

Simon Whitfield, Director of Quality Improvement and Medicines Optimisation, Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said:

“Fantastic achievement by Nikki and the team to develop an innovative solution that will really make a difference to patient care. This project has demonstrated the power of effective collaboration and I look forward to future successes!”

Erika’s entry in the category of Supporting out community care providers during the pandemic was a collaborative education initiative to support reducing the spread of Covid-19 and keeping care providers residents and staff safe.

Eileen Clark, Associated Director of ICS Quality said:

“Well done Erika!! You should be very proud of yourselves and the work that you have led with colleagues”.
